Halibut fishing is what Homer is famous for and 5.O Ultimate Adventures partner has been fishing halibut out of Homer since 1979 as a legally permitted business. We operate full-day trips and multiple-day long range trips. Our halibut fishing season begins in late April and we fish until mid September. The daily limit for halibut remains at 2 per person.
Our knowledgeable and helpful office staff can help you with your fishing needs and arrange lodging, flight seeing, kayaking, bear viewing, water taxi service, and many activities for you while you are in Homer. For all of our fishing trips, you will need to purchase a fishing license and bring your drinks, snacks, and meals for the day. You never know what the weather is going to do out on the ocean, so it’s best to be prepared with warm layered clothes and light rain gear.
Salmon Fishing
The Homer area offers some of the finest salt water salmon fishing in the world. We have exceptional year round King Salmon fishing and amazing Silver Salmon fishing in August.
Most of our salmon fishing is done by trolling bait or lures near shore. We are usually in the protected waters of Kachemak Bay, a short distance from the Homer harbor. At times we use downriggers and other times we use trolling weights or divers, as it depends on the depth of the fish and the salmon targeted. We also mooch when appropriate.
Spring is a great time to get in some fishing for feeder kings (king salmon feeding in the rich waters of the Kachemak bay that will eventually spawn in rivers elsewhere.) We have a large number of the very sought after white king salmon, as well. Beginning in June and running through July, we start catching the large spawning kings (those headed to spawn in local rivers including the world famous Kenai River). In Homer we have the advantage of having all of the king salmon runs in Cook Inlet coming right by our doorstep! This means even greater chances of salmon success for you because we are fishing several runs of fish at one time.
In late July and August we have several runs of the scrappy Silver Salmon in the area. The last week in July and first three weeks of August generally have the best Silver Salmon fishing and have historically coincided with a strong showing of feeder kings. Good numbers of pink and sockeye salmon are also available at different times during the summer. Know that we offer multi species fishing trips all season long. Give us a call and we can tell you what options are available. Lingcod season begins July 1st and a day of fishing for them is a great way to round out your Alaskan fishing adventure.
Also available are long-range trips on our large, comfortable boats. On these trips you spend two or more days using one of our vessels as a mobile lodge fishing for halibut, salmon, rockfish, and lingcod. Generally speaking, after August 1st we can take a skiff along and bank fish some of the remote rivers with fly or spin tackle for silver salmon. Our complete vacation packages can contain fresh water salmon fishing for all species of salmon from power boats and/or drift boats. We have tremendous trout fishing in the area from drift boats on the upper Kenai River and by using float planes to fly to remote locations. Vacation packages also allow you ample time to browse through our wonderful selection of Homer Ocean shirts and hats. You could get all of your Christmas shopping done right in our office- what a concept! For all of our fishing trips, you will need to purchase a fishing license, and bring your drinks, snacks, and meals for the day. You never know what the weather is going to do out on the ocean, so it's best to be prepared with warm layered clothes and light rain gear.
