America's most popular big game needs no introduction. While the total number of deer in Alberta may be dwarfed by other jurisdictions, it is no secret that we may have the highest number of trophy animals in North America. The record book white-tailed deer are usually taken in farm country - primarily because 90% of all deer hunting takes place there! However, our area, the boreal forest north of the agricultural areas, is known to produce very heavy antlers and often slightly non-typical racks. We have both white-tailed and mule deer, with sizes comparable to those in any other area. For last couple of years, the white-tailed deer clearly dominates the deer population.
When hunting during the rut, we alternate between two basic methods: waiting in stands and still hunting. Statistically we harvest most of the deer from stands, but the choice is the hunters - some like to sit, some like to walk and some do both. Rattling and grunting are also employed. The most successful methods are debatable. All require dedication in the form of patience, alertness and the ability to see and hear everything without being seen or heard. This can be difficult but rewarding when successfully implemented.
We have over 20 stands at our disposal. Some are built in trees, while others are freestanding making them easy to move.
Travel Arrangements
Edmonton has good air connections to the International Airport. Please advise us of your arrival time. Normally we will pick you up, or we will agree upon other arrangements. At your request, we will book hotel room.
Dates shown on the program are actual departure dates from Edmonton to the hunting area and arrival dates back to Edmonton and your travel arrangements should be planned accordingly. If you have some extra days you can spend in Canada, we will be happy to assist and advise you on possible activities. We recommend a two day trip to Jasper National Park, which offers breathtaking scenery.
We welcome non-hunting companions. If your companion chooses to stay in the city rather than accompany you during your hunt, several options could be arranged.
Camp Facilities
Our main camp is located 100 km/60 miles east of the town of Slave Lake (55° 25' 21'' N and 113° 41' 31'' W) on the bank of a lake with an abundance of Northern Pike. (If you are interested in fishing, please inquire!) The camp consists of tent frames with solid walls and insulated floors. Each tent has good wood stoves. Privacy for couples can be accommodated. Bring your own sleeping bag, or rent from us.
The guides are responsible for all chores in camp, although a helping hand is certainly appreciated. Emphasis is placed on clean, well organized camps and great food - both continually praised by our hunters. Canned food is rare, as we prefer a well-balanced and varied diet based on fresh and frozen food. If advised, we can easily accommodate any diet restrictions or satisfy any special taste.
